Images of the 1920s
September 27th, 2024 – February, 16th 2025
War traumas, revolution and political radicalization, democracy, women's suffrage, freedom and individuality, poverty and wealth: the 1920s were a time full of contradictions and supposed incompatibilities. Works by Otto Dix, Conrad Felixmüller, George Grosz, Käthe Kollwitz and Elisabeth Voigt reflect life between the world wars, on the street, in the factory, in cafés and cabarets. Above all, they focus on those people who were at the lowest rung of society. Around 100 years later, the same themes are still relevant. The exhibition shows works from Expressionism to New Objectivity from the Lindenau Museum Altenburg and the Freiburg Museum of Contemporary Art, supplemented by contemporary artistic positions. Monika Huber's video work RIOTS from 2018 can be seen in the exhibition room “revolution”. A catalog accompanies the exhibition.
