Heavy clashes again break out in Cairo between demonstrators and military council security forces ahead of the runoff election of direct candidates for Egypt’s nine provinces. Egyptian soldiers erect a wall of concrete blocks around Tahrir Square to protect the adjacent government district and try to disperse the demonstrators with batons, tear gas, and firearms. The demonstrators respond with stones and incendiary devices. There are nine dead and around 300 injured. The interim government’s prime minister Kamal al Gansuri denies that the soldiers fired on the demonstrators.
